Biography

David Seager (born February 1973) is a visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). Born in Detroit, Michigan, Seager grew up in Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He pursued graduate studies at Clemson University in South Carolina, earning a Master's degree in Thermal Fluid Sciences. Shortly after completing his education, Seager began his career in visual effects at Square USA, as a lighting and sequence supervisor on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001). Over the next 20 years, Seager held roles at Centropolis FX, Sony Pictures Imageworks, The Moving Picture Company, and Industrial Light & Magic, working on more than 28 films and streaming projects. His early work included supervisory roles in lighting, computer graphics, and digital effects, and he progressed to supervisor roles by 2000. Notable projects during this period include The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), The Aviator (2004), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). He also supervised visual effects for Watchmen (2009), Green Lantern (2011), and Men in Black III (2012) while at Sony Pictures Imageworks. Seager joined MPC in 2014, supervising visual effects for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014), Furious 7(2015), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015), Ghostbusters (2016), and Alpha (2018). In 2017, he moved to Industrial Light & Magic in Vancouver, where he oversaw projects including Aladdin (2019), Terminator: Dark Fate(2019), We Can Be Heroes (2020), Loki (2021), Eternals (2021), The Book of Boba Fett (2022), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), and Tron: Ares (2025). His work spans episodic television, streaming content, and blockbuster films, reflecting expertise in on-set supervision, pipeline engineering, shader writing, project management, and client collaboration. Throughout his career, Seager has received recognition from industry organisations. He was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Special Effects for Aladdin (2019) alongside Michael Mulholland, Daniele Bigi, and Jeff Capogreco. His work on Loki (2021) earned a Visual Effects Society Award nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode, shared with Dan DeLeeuw, Allison Paul, and Sandra Balej, and an HPA Award nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects in Episodic or Non-Theatrical Feature. He received VES Award nominations for The Aviator (2004), Maleficent (2014), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), and Tron: Ares (2025). Seager's career achievements were recognised in 2020 when he was invited to join the Visual Effects Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Based in Vancouver since 2012, he lives with his wife and three sons.
